The Convitto della Calza building, raised in the 14th century as the Hospital of San Giovanni Battista, owes its name to the congregation of Gesuati friars that occupied it beginning in 1529. The friars wore a strip of cloth on their left shoulder; its resemblance to a stocking (calza) gave the building its present name. Since its foundation, the various religious orders that have lived here have embellished the building with works of art of great beauty: the 15th century cloister, the fresco of the Last Supper by Franciabigio (1514) and the Cardinal Mistrangelo chapel. |
| The Convitto della Calza - Oltrarno Meeting Center is a uniquely suggestive, professionally oriented structure offering high quality congress and event services. The Center's 7 meeting rooms, equipped with state-of-the-art technology, can host any type of meeting or event for groups from 20 to 400 and an exhibition space combined with a suggestive cloister of the XIV century could be the right place for meetings and events. It is strategically located in the heart of the historical center on the other side of the Arno, The Oltrarno, surrounded by remarkable works of the Renaissance (close to Boboli Gardens, Palazzo Pitti, Piazzale Michelangelo) and it is very close to the routes which link Florence to a network of motorways. Santa Maria Novella Railway Station is well connected to the Convitto by bus. |
